National champion with youngsters in 2002, 1st National fancier of Holland WHZB in 2003, many championships in Combine level and now also winner in Category 4 of the National competition Eendaagse Fondspiegel!
No one was able to keep up with the level of Nico-Jan Koenders, who was also 1st champion not-nominated in one day long distance of Combine. On all one day long distance races he won 1st prize in Fed, and his prize percentage of 79% is extremely impressing. On a fine autumn-day we visited him and asked him some questions.
No Cures
The 41 years old agent of the food firm Versele Laga races at a supreme level for many years already and those who think he thanks that to some pills or powders he can acquire easy in his profession, are wrong. “My pigeons get only good food, a varied mixture of minerals and fresh grind. The rest is bullocks. Stuff like thee, electrolytes, amino-acids, beer-yeast, etc.; I don’t believe it. I tried it all and found out pigeons can do extremely well without it. In one loft I gave all these things, in the other loft I gave nothing … And there was no single difference in the level of performances.
The medical issue is quite simple too. “My pigeons are injected against paramixo and in winter they get a paratyphoid cure. I take no more preventive action. I know not many people believe this story, but why should I lie about it?? I work for a firm that sells additional products and medicines for pigeons, it would be of more interest to me that I do give those extra’s. But believe me; when you own pigeons that are healthy by nature you can do without additional products. In January 2002 I gave my last canker cure. Ever since my pigeons got nothing against canker and I can say the performances stayed at the same level. In the year I quit all the blind cures I became National champion with young birds and one year later I became 1st National fancier of Holland WHZB. I must say I was the victim of adeno coly with youngsters that year. I had to cure at the time, otherwise I would surely have won no championship at all, but if they would have been ill within the season, I would have just let them get well on their own.
Important factor
Nico-Jan believes his food system is an important factor for his success. “I enter my pigeons every week. In between two long distance races, I basket them for middle distance and to stay fit in a system like this the pigeons need good food that is adjusted to the system. When pigeons arrive from a race they get fifty percent Widowhood Plus and fifty percent Gerry Plus of Versele Laga. I believe you should not feed too light, and than shortages can be added as soon as possible. Gerry Plus, with less pees and beans and therefore poor of protein, the food stays light digestible and it enables a steady reactivation of the metabolism. On Sunday my pigeons get seventy percent Gerry Plus and thirty percent Widowhood Plus. Than until the day of basketing the pigeons get fifty percent Widowhood Plus and fifty percent Gerry Plus. On the day of basketing I feed them in the morning eighty percent Widowhood Plus and twenty percent Gerry Plus. In the afternoon they get some candy seeds so they will drink for sure. I feed my widowers in small pots; two eating spoons full per pigeons and at every feeding time. It seems a lot, and some food always remains, but that I give to the youngsters. The advantage of this way of feeding is that widowers are never hungry and therefore they train much better.”
Dream Pair
For many years already Koenders is one of Hollands top racers. Until the late nineties this was above all with descendants of NL86-384560, himself winner of seven times 1st prize, and now with descendants of his 'Dream Pair'.
This dream pair consists of NL94-2609439 x NL02-2458668, two pigeons that made this great champion to a National star. The base of this pair goes back to pigeons of the best one day racer of The Netherlands, that is Jan Ouwerkerk from Lekkerkerk, the Belgian butcher Leo Broeckx and the miracle man from Zutphen Peter van Osch.
How do you get such a top pair? "In 1997 I exchanged some pigeons with Joop van Buuren. He gave me the NL97-1041145 and NL97-1041146, both winners of 1st prizes against thousands of pigeons and especially the '146', named 'Dennis', appeared to be an amazing crack. He was crowned in 1998 as 6th National old acebird WHZB, but also 1st acebird middle distance and 1st acebird overall in Combine. He is besides a super breeder; children and grandchildren already won over thirty 1st prizes. Joop van Buuren retired from pigeon racing, and I bought the pair. I build up almost my entire loft with it.”
An early breeder
A year after Nico-Jan won his first National championship, he was the very unexpected winner of the title ‘Best National Fancier’ in the WHZB-competition. “Amongst the four pigeons responsible for this title were three sons to the already mentioned 'Dennis'. One of these sons, 'Zlatan' (NL01-2426984), is a real crack. He became 2nd National acebird WHZB and two years in a row he was 1st acebird in Amalgamation. These three sons, all 2001 born pigeons, I moved to the breeding loft in 2003. And the great thing is that now, especially thanks to these cocks, I won the National competition Eendaagse Fondspiegel in category 4. Four children of them won 1st prizes in Fed this year!! A son to 'Zlatan', 'Salinero' (NL03-2036127), was crowned as 1st acebird middle distance in Amalgamation, just like his father and grandfather.
The foundation of Nico-Jan Koenders possesses unlimited inheritable qualities. His top racers already proved it, without exception they produced useful offspring. The system of Nico-Jan is the most simple one we ever came across; good pigeons, a fine loft and tight care. And besides?? Nothing at all …

Winnaar Categorie 4 Nationale Eendaagse Fondspiegel

Nationaal kampioen met de jonge duiven in 2002, Beste Liefhebber van WHZB in 2003, veel kampioenschappen op afdelingsniveau, en nu ook nog winnaar in Categorie 4 van de Nationale Eendaagse Fondspiegel!
Er staat er geen maat op het spel van Nico-Jan Koenders, die ook in Afdeling 8 onaangewezen kampioen op de eendaagse fond is geworden. Op alle eendaagse fondvluchten speelde hij een eerste in de kring, en zijn prijspercentage van 79% is indrukwekkend te noemen. Op een mooie herfstdag bezochten we hem en legden we hem een aantal vragen voor.
GEEN KUURTJES
De 41-jarige vertegenwoordiger van Versele Laga speelt al jaren sterk, en wie denkt dat dit te danken is aan allemaal pillen en poedertjes waar hij beroepshalve makkelijk aan kan komen heeft het mis. "Mijn duiven krijgen enkel goed voer, een gevarieerd mineralenmengsel en vers grit. De rest is onzin. In thee, elektrolyten, aminozuren, biergist enzovoorts geloof ik niet. Ik heb alles geprobeerd en vastgesteld dat duiven het kunnen missen. In het ene hok gaf ik alles, en in het andere hok niets. Een verschil in prestaties was er niet.''Ook het medische plaatje is uiterst eenvoudig. "Mijn duiven worden geënt tegen paramyxo en krijgen 's winters een kuur tegen paratyfus. Preventief doe ik verder niets. Ik weet dat mensen dit maar moeilijk kunnen geloven, maar waarom zou ik erover liegen? Ik werk voor een firma die bijproducten en medicijnen voor duiven verkoopt, ik zou er eerder belang bij hebben te zeggen dat ik wél iets geef. Maar geloof me, als je duiven hebt die van nature gezond zijn dan kan het zonder. In januari 2002 heb ik voor het laatst een geelkuur gegeven. Sindsdien hebben ze niets meer tegen het Geel gehad, en ik kan niet zeggen dat het sinds die tijd slechter is gegaan. In het jaar dat ik ben gestopt met al die blinde kuurtjes werd ik Nederlands kampioen met de jonge duiven en een jaar later Beste Liefhebber van Wie Heeft Ze Beter. Wel moet ik zeggen dat ik dit jaar te kampen kreeg met coli tijdens het jonge-duivenseizoen. Toen moest ik wel kuren, anders kon ik het kampioenschap wel vergeten, maar als ze voor het seizoen ziek waren geworden had ik ze gewoon uit laten zieken.''
BELANGRIJKE FACTOR
Het voersysteem vind Nico-Jan een belangrijke factor in zijn succes. “Ik speel mijn duiven iedere week. Tussen twee dagfondvluchten in speel ik ze op de midfond, en om dat vol te kunnen houden moeten ze voeding hebben die daarop is afgestemd. Bij thuiskomst krijgen ze vijftig procent Weduwschap plus en vijftig procent Gerry Plus van Versele Laga. Ik denk dat je niet te licht moet voeren, zodat de tekorten zo snel mogelijk weer aangevuld kunnen worden. Door de Gerry Plus, waarin weinig erwten en bonen zitten en daardoor eiwitarm is, blijft de kost licht verteerbaar zodat de stofwisseling weer rustig op gang kan komen. Op zondag krijgen mijn duiven zeventig procent Gerry Plus en dertig procent Weduwschap plus. Vervolgens krijgen ze tot de dag voor inmanden vijftig procent Weduwschap plus en vijftig procent Gerry Plus. Op de dag van inmanden voer ik ze ‘s ochtends tachtig procent Weduwschap plus en twintig procent Gerry plus. ‘s Middags krijgen ze nog een beetje snoepzaad zodat ze in ieder geval nog goed gedronken hebben. Ik voer mijn weduwnaars in potjes. Twee eetlepels per duif en per voerbeurt. Dat lijkt veel, er blijft ook altijd wat over, maar dat is voor de jonge duiven. Het voordeel van deze manier van voeren is dat de weduwnaars nooit honger hebben en daardoor ook beter trainen."
DROOMKOPPEL
Koenders speelt al jaren goed. Tot eind jaren '90 is dit met nakomelingen van zijn NL86-384560, winnaar van liefst zeven eerste prijzen, en thans met nakomelingen van zijn 'Stamkoppel'.
Het bestaat uit de NL94-2609439 x NL02-2458668, twee duiven die een groot kampioen tot Nationale vedette maakten. Aan de basis van dit koppel staan duiven van beste eendaagse fondspeler van Nederland, namelijk Jan Ouwerkerk uit Lekkerkerk, de Belgische slager Leo Broeckx en de Zutphense sterspeler Peter van Osch.
Hoe kom je aan zo'n koppel? "In 1997 ruilde ik een koppel duiven met Joop van Buuren. Ik kreeg de NL97-1041145 en NL97-1041146, beide wonnen een eerste tegen duizenden duiven en vooral de '146', genaamd 'Dennis', bleek een echte super. Hij werd in 1998 6e beste oude asduif in de competitie WHZB, maar ook beste midfondduif en generaalduifkampioen van Afdeling 8. Bovendien is hij een superkweker; kinderen- en kleinkinderen wonnen tot op heden al ruim dertig eerste prijzen. Joop van Buuren zei de duivensport vaarwel, en ik kocht het koppel. Ik heb er zowat mijn hele hok mee opgebouwd.''
VROEG NAAR DE KWEEK
Een jaar nadat Nico-Jan zijn eerste Nationaal kampioenschap had binnengehaald won hij vrij onverwacht de titel 'Beste Liefhebber' bij WHZB.
"Onder de vier duiven die ik op moest geven voor de deze titel waren drie zonen van de eerdergenoemde 'Dennis'. Één van zijn zonen, 'Zlatan' (NL01-2426984), is een échte crack. Hij werd 2e Asduif in de competitie WHZB en twee jaar op rij duifkampioen in Regio 4 van Afdeling 8. Ik heb deze drie zonen, allemaal pas van 2001, in 2003 al naar de kweek verhuisd. En het mooie is dat ik nu, vooral dankzij deze doffers, winnaar in Categorie 4 van de Nationale Eendaagse Fondspiegel ben geworden! Vier kinderen vliegen dit jaar een eerste in de kring! Een zoon van 'Zlatan', 'Salinero' (NL03-2036127) werd duifkampioen midfond in de regio, net als zijn vader en grootvader."
De stam duiven van Nico-Jan beschikt over onbegrensde erfelijke kwaliteiten. Dat hebben zijn toppers inmiddels wel bewezen, ze kweken zonder uitzondering goed door. Het systeem van Nico-Jan is het meest eenvoudige dat we ooit zijn tegengekomen: goede duiven, een goed hok en een stipte verzorging. En verder? Helemaal niets!
